CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland school district and three other organizations recognized 10 of its top teachers with its first-ever Excellence in Teaching awards Thursday night.
The district, Cleveland Teachers Union and the Cleveland and Gund foundations jointly started the awards to “reward teachers who demonstrate instructional expertise, creativity and innovation, make learning engaging, vibrant and relevant and set a standard for quality.”
The winners were all honored at a reception at the new Drury Plaza Hotel, the hotel created out of the district’s old headquarters on E. Sixth Street. Each received a $5,000 award from the foundations to use as they please, with no stipulation that it be used in their classrooms.
Another 18 teachers were named as “honorees” for their work.
