2019 Winner

Maureen Anderson

Douglas MacArthur Girls' Leadership Academy

PreK–8th Grade Physical Education

“Maureen is a multi-faceted, creative, and talented person who brings joy and activity to our school. Unlike any teacher I have ever met, she constantly researches and implements programs and activities that she thinks would benefit students over their lifetime.”

Maureen Anderson graduated from Tri State University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education K–12. She received her Master’s degree from Indiana Wesleyan in 2016. Maureen has spent the last 22 years serving the children and families of Cleveland. Maureen teaches with writing and demonstration followed by student self-practice, small group, and whole group activities. She takes advantage of many opportunities to expose her students to events and activities to which they otherwise wouldn’t have access. Her philosophy is one in which mistakes will be made, it’s okay, it’s part of the process, and the important thing is to keep trying and to never give up. Maureen’s girls leave her class stronger, both physically and mentally. Her goal every day is for her girls to have fun, be active, and to gain a sense of self-confidence and accomplishment, whether as an individual or as a team. Maureen and her husband, Mark, recently celebrated their 30th anniversary. They have a son, Tyler; and a daughter, Alison. Their family is completed by their four-legged daughter, Brooklyn.
