Arts Integration Strategy #1: ELA and Film

Josette Compton is in her fifth year of teaching English Language Arts and Journalism. Prior to joining the Cleveland High School for Digital Arts, where she teaches ninth grade English, she served as a Teach for America (TFA) corps member in Atlanta, where she taught Advanced Placement English Language and Composition, and launched the school’s first ever student magazine. She is a proud graduate of Howard University and The New School, and is now pursuing her doctorate at Northeastern University in digital arts integration. Prior to teaching, Josette worked as a magazine journalist in New York City for publications such as Entertainment Weekly, XXL, People, and Interview magazines, all of which influence her instructional practices in writing, reading comprehension, and visual storytelling. At present, she utilizes arts integration as a means to ensure that students are able to synthesize information across content and curate their artwork. Outside of the classroom, Josette paints and volunteers at an arts-based nonprofit called Jamocha Arts Center.
